Target Research

That Sunday – in between couplings – they also planned their surveillance strategy for the coming weeks.

“What’s your plan for surveilling the targets?” Fuller asked.

“I’ll spend three or four days on each, getting a baseline. I expect the other two will change their habits when I hit the first one.”

“So two, three weeks?”

“Or a month. Yeah, something like that.”

“Long time, D.K.”

“You gotta have patience in this business.”

Fuller nodded. Same thing with DoJ investigations. This she was used to. Still…

“You know, D.K., we could cut that time in half if we split the surveillance.”

Sharp opened his mouth, then closed it. His knee-jerk reaction was to say No. He was a lone wolf, always had been. Then again, on this mission, he had relied heavily on the experience and expertise of Fuller, Camden, and Thompsen. He would not be this far along without them. Would, in fact, probably still be waiting on the analysis section.

It wasn’t like she didn’t know how to do this. Senior investigator for the DoJ on any planet was not purely a desk job. Anything but.

Fuller spoke into his hesitation.

“It also reduces the odds you get made.”

“And if you get made? No offense, but you sort of stand out. Particularly to men.”

“It’s happened before. I’ll manage.”

Sharp nodded. That had to have happened before. They were going to be doing surveillance in crowded public spaces as well, so there was a limit on the methods that could be used against her.

“All right. Sounds good. Let’s go over who and when and what information I need.”

With Gotham’s subtropical location and the resulting pleasant climate, there were a lot of sidewalk cafés in Elizabeth’s capital city. In particular, there was one across the street and a bit down the block from the building in which Elton Thomas lived.

Thomas was the richest of the three targets, and the most dangerous. The piracy operation had been his idea, and he had made out very well from it. Then in his mid-thirties and now approaching sixty, he was wealthy, powerful, and ruthless.

Sharp was inclined to execute Thomas first, because he had the greatest capability to go after Sharp. Take him out first, though, and he was neutralized before he knew what was going on. Were Sharp to hit one of the others first, Thomas would be off the leash in going after Sharp.

Sharp noticed something the first day watching Thomas’ residence. A weakness. A crack in his defenses. Rather than watch his work location in subsequent days, Sharp watched his residence every morning. He changed tables each day, until he had the location he wanted.

It would be perfect.

Fuller had started watching Thurl, both in the mornings and the afternoons. Then Sharp took the afternoons on Thurl, after Thomas in the morning, and she spent the afternoons on Anderson.

Now done with Thomas, on the fourth day Sharp took Thurl both morning and afternoon, and Fuller concentrated on Anderson.

On Friday, her second day watching for Anderson in the morning, two men approached Fuller in the coffee shop seating in the lobby of the building where he lived.
